History of the Niagara SkyWheel
Construction on the world's largest Ferris wheel began in 2011 and was originally scheduled to be completed by 2013. However, the construction process was delayed and the opening date was pushed back to May 2015. The ride was officially opened on May 28th, 2015, exactly one year after it was first scheduled to open. The idea to build a Ferris wheel in Niagara-on-the-Lake came about in 2010, when a local businessman realized the city of Niagara had a huge tourism draw as a tourist destination. However, he felt that the city did not have anything to offer as a tourist attraction that would compete with Montreal or Toronto for the attention of international tourists, as those cities have larger cities and more attractions than Niagara-on-the-Lake. The businessman saw a Ferris wheel as a potential tourist draw that could compete with those larger cities, and he was able to convince city officials to approve the idea.
The Ride
The ride on the Niagara SkyWheel lasts for about 30 minutes and visitors rise up to an altitude of 190 metres (620 ft). The ride begins by slowly driving past the bottom of the Gorge and then passing above the main Falls, where visitors can get incredible views of the city and the Falls. The ride then passes above the locks of the Welland Canal, before arriving at the top of the SkyWheel. There, the ride takes a slow turn to the right and then the left, giving visitors a glimpse of the city below and the Niagara River flowing through the Gorge to the right. The SkyWheel then turns back towards the river and heads south, passing over the Horseshoe Falls and the community of St. Davids. The ride then heads back north, passing over the Canadian War Museum and the Clifton Hill neighbourhood of the city. The ride then returns to the central point near the base of the SkyWheel, where the ride concludes. Next Article
